February Featured artist: Coty Keller

This month, the walls of HEMP feature works by local painter, Coty Keller.
‘The Celestial Seas’, is a cosmic re-imagining of our most alien, yet terrestrial sea creatures. It’s also a reminder that our (one and only) home is an island oasis amongst the in-numerous uninhabitable islands in the unfathomably vast sea of space.

Coty Keller has been moved to paint and draw since the moment he was able to hold his first crayon as a child. With the support and encouragement of his family, this interest grew into a passion. Coty’s been inspired by and has an appreciation for a wide spectrum of artists and art styles. Several of those artists include (but are not limited to) Alex Grey, M.C. Escher, Salvador Dali, Frank Frazetta, and H.R. Giger. He also has a deep admiration for the Renaissance Masters, and in particular, Leonardo da Vinci, whose many contributions to the arts and science Coty’s always found amazing. Coty attended the Art Institute of Pittsburgh for a Media Arts and Animation degree through their online program for two years. He has however continued to study independently to develop various skills in drawing, painting, and other art forms. Check out more about Coty and his incredible work here.

She formed a new cannabis oriented photography company called NW Chronic Photography in 2015.

November Featured Artists: Reid Trevarthen & Corrin Lee
Reid Trevarthen’s artist bio:

I often say that my secret dream is to be an impressionist painter. I’m specifically fascinated by the way in which artists like Monet and Degas used light and color to not only depict their subjects, but enhance them. Their works make me feel like am actually seeing the world through their eyes, unaltered by time. These pieces are my best effort to mimic the qualities I find so evocative in their paintings using paper instead of paint. Before this body of work, I hadn’t yet attempted to use a realistic color palette in my work, under the assumption that it would take too long to hunt for just the right shade and color. Once I tried, however, I realized that using magazines that photograph reality means that I had far more realistic colors available than saturated magentas and reds. I also discovered that I only to had to approximate true color, in the same way that the Impressionists did, to achieve the degree of realism I wanted. Even the process of making these collages feels like painting.

Recently, I have been incorporating more traditional collage elements, such as inserting whole images straight from the magazine into my work. This allows me to inject humor into the pieces, and encourages impulsive choices. Including these images helps ground the work in the medium of collage, and keeps me from becoming too habitual in my process. I am excited to see what will change in my art over the next year.

October Featured Artists: Mike Stevens and Courtney Landrus

About Michael Stevens: 7 years ago, Michael Stevens met the love of his life, and in that time was introduced by her to many new mediums of art, one of those mediums he struggled most to perfect. So, instead of perfecting his craft, he decided to rather release his horrible, ugly, fragile monstrous clay sculptures upon the world in all of their imperfect beauty. Monstrous faces are the true feelings and emotions that embodied his many moods and characteristics throughout his life. A spectacle that shows…Some of us have more demons than others. Check out Michael’s Monstrous Faces here.

Courtney Landrus is a tattoo artist in Washington state who also specializes in watercolor paintings. Learning to paint in this medium was her first step into the world of tattoo art. Her best work happens when her minds eye, hands, and her soul come together on paper to portray even the small and ordinary details of life as beautiful and exquisitely unique. She enjoys creating art in a lifted and positive state of being and has a gift of capturing the world around her through her art; sharing this gift with others is her ultimate purpose as an artist. The psychology of the human mind and the beauty that is created from our brains is a source of endless fascination for her and she hopes to lift others to see the light in this world not just as an artist but as a person living in it. Courtney is originally from Spokane, Washington and now lives in Portland, Oregon with her daughter Sailor.

Find out more about Courtney by visiting her Facebook page.

History of Cannabis as Medicine

Cannabis has long been used as a medicine in Asian, African and South American countries. The first evidence of the medicinal use of cannabis is in an herbal published during the reign of the Chinese Emperor Chen Nung 5000 years ago. It was recommended for malaria, constipation, rheumatic pains, ‘absentmindedness’ and ‘female disorders’. I’m neither a doctor nor female, but I’ve lived with both and can confirm with anecdotal evidence that cannabis can be used to treat ‘female disorders’, so Chen Nung was definitely onto something 5000 years ago.

According to “History of Cannabis as a Medicine” by Lester Grinspoon, M.D., in India cannabis has been recommended to quicken the mind, lower fevers, induce sleep, cure dysentery, stimulate appetite, improve digestion, relieve headaches, and cure venereal disease. I’m still not a doctor but that last part doesn’t sound right to me, but I don’t know enough about venereal disease to dispute it.
In the West cannabis did not come into its own as a medicine until the mid-nineteenth century. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, numerous papers were published in Western medical journals recommending it for various illnesses and discomforts. Although during that time period they were also recommending opium and cocaine to treat a wide variety of illness, like the common cold.

In the past 100 years we’ve seen the prohibition and resurgence of medical marijuana in the United States.

· 1914 – Drug use, under the Harrison Act, is officially declared a crime.

· 1937 – By now, 23 states have outlawed marijuana. The government also passes the “Marihuana Tax Act”, making the use of non-medical marijuana illegal. Cannabis was still used in various medical treatments, albeit in controlled forms.

· 1970 – Marijuana was categorized as a Schedule I drug along with more dangerous ones, and was listed as having no accepted medical use. Despite the fact that some early American medical journals had begun listing the medical uses of cannabis, the government restricted any further research.

· 1985 – Marinol, the only US FDA-approved pharmaceutical is introduced and classified as a Schedule II controlled substance.

· 1996 – Patients and advocates turned to the state level for access, passing voter initiatives in California and Arizona that allowed for legal use of cannabis with a doctor’s recommendation. These victories were followed by the passage of similar initiatives in Alaska, Colorado, Maine, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, and Washington D.C.

· 1999 – Marinol downgraded to a Schedule III controlled substance. Yet cannabis in its natural flower form still remains a Schedule I drug for the foreseeable future.

As of 2017, cannabis still remains a Schedule I drug; along with MDMA, LSD, peyote, quaaludes and heroin these drugs are defined as drugs with no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse. In August 2017 however, the FDA has granted Breakthrough Therapy Designation to MDMA for the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder).
