June 2017 Featured Artist:  Diane Irby

Mixed media, photography, assemblage and hand embroidered works created by Vancouver artist, Diane Irby, will be on exhibit in the front parlor gallery of High End Market Place throughout the month of June.

Diane Irby is a multidisciplinary artist, environmentalist, explorer & hopeless romantic. Her art career was established in Detroit, where she spent years urban exploring, photographing her environment, & creating mixed media works with ephemera harvested from the abandoned locations she’d visit. She went on to become a well known curator of art events in the Detroit area, was invited to exhibit her first solo show at the esteemed Scarab Club of Detroit, & in 2014 was named Best Detroit Local Artist.

Diane’s artwork can be found in collections & galleries throughout the U.S. & across the globe. She is well sought after for her work as an artistic portrait photographer, & has been featured in numerous art publications. Most recently, Diane’s art was featured on Portlandia, Season 7 (American TV show).

Diane’s aesthetic is often a mix of antiquated imagery & colors. In her photography & mixed media works she brings to light the beauty in sadness, nostalgia, solitude, longing & decay.

She takes special interest in using genuine ephemera & materials, many of which come directly from abandoned locations and antique auctions, adding another level of authenticity to the emotions evoked by the work.

In the summer of 2015, Diane moved across the country to settle in Vancouver, WA with her daughter & fiance, outsider artist Justin Aerni. Together they live & create in a cottage on a little hill with their two cats. Find out more about Diane Irby at dianeirby.com

Cannabis Lounges in Legal States

Are cannabis lounges legal in the Pacific Northwest? What about in other states that have recently legalized marijuana? What does the future for lounges in Portland, OR and Vancouver, WA look like?

Legal cannabis passed in Colorado and Washington state in 2013.  And As of November 9, 2016, the use of both recreational and medicinal marijuana has been legalized in additional states of Oregon, Nevada, Maine, Alaska, Massachusetts and California.  With an ever growing number of states that have legalized recreational marijuana, “Pot Tourism” is also on the rise.  I think that prior to legalization, a lot of people, myself included, envisioned pot cafes on every corner similar to Amsterdam where you could purchase your flower and roll one up and just enjoy a nice cup of coffee with your legally obtained cannabis. That was in fact the only thing that I had to do when I had a 12 hour layover in Amsterdam a few years ago and I still remember it fondly to this day.

Here in Pacific Northwest, that idea was pioneered by Madeline Martinez and the World Famous Cannabis Café in Portland, OR.  However, in early 2016 amid threats of daily fines, the WFCC was forced to shut its doors leaving the NW Cannabis Club the only currently operating cannabis club in the Portland area. Lawmakers expanded Oregon’s Indoor Clean Air Act in 2015 to prohibit the use of devices such as vaporizer pens and e-cigarettes in public areas and workplaces. Marijuana was also added to the law, which initially targeted only tobacco.  The indoor clean air law includes exemptions for two types of businesses: cigar bars, where patrons may smoke cigars, and smoke shops, where tobacco consumption is allowed. Both kinds of businesses must be certified by the state.

Don’t expect one here in Vancouver, WA anytime soon either, as tucked inside the HB 2136 legislation, a bill hailed by the state’s marijuana industry as a way to make the heavy taxation it faces more palatable, is a provision that outlaws marijuana clubs.  The new law makes operating “a club, association, or other business, for profit or otherwise, that conducts or maintains a premises for the primary or incidental purpose of providing a location where members or other persons may keep or consume marijuana on the premises” a class C felony.

Alaska has gone ahead and allowed for indoor public cannabis consumption, and the leading 2016 legalization initiatives in MaineMassachusetts, and California all allow for some sort of on-site public consumption.  So only time will tell what the state level legislation will allow.  But it sadly will not happen in WA State anytime soon.

Madeline Martinez said she plans to shift her focus to lobbying for a change to the clean air statute in 2017.

Introducing Journeyman Edible Packs, Errls Oil, and a Female Suppository by Fairwinds Manufacturing!

Journeyman Edible Packs: From the same company that brings you SPOT, Moxey’s, and PROPER cannabis infused edibles, we’re proud to announce the arrival of the newest Journeyman lineup from botanicaSEATTLE! Today, we’ve added three new Journeyman edible packs to the menu including chocolate covered potato chips called “Couch Potatoes”, sweet and sour “Weed Tarts”, as well as their “Munchie Pack” which includes snickerdoodle, peanut butter, and triple chocolate cookies. Each edible pack is 100mg total, and are affordably priced at $25 each.

Errls Premium Cannabis Concentrates: The first time we tried Errls and experienced their terp-o-meter first hand, we knew it was a product that our customers and patients would love. Errls brings premium concentrates to the market at a very affordable price, and we are stoked to partner with them to offer their potent and tasty wax and high CBD sap. Be sure to pick some up next time you’re in the shop, and remember, you save on concentrates on Wax Wednesday and Shatterday!

Cannabis Female Suppository: Yes, that’s right. This is another first for the medical and recreational cannabis industry here in Washington State, and we can thank Fairwinds Manufacturing. It comes to no surprise to us that Fairwinds is pushing the envelope once again with a product that disrupts the current offerings in the state, but more importantly, has the potential to help so many women. “Feminine Relief is designed to provide daily and monthly relief to women, and the CBD, THCA, and THC cannabinoid ratio are optimized to support relaxation and comfort without psychoactive effects.” Details on the product description can be found here.

H.E.M.P.’s Partnership with PREVENT!

High End Marketing Place has been partnering with PREVENT! coalition since April 2015, when PREVENT! launched their “Weed Can Wait” youth now program.  Together with PREVENT! we’ve passed out thousands of point of sale cards to our customers and patients that shop with us. The focus of the cards is to educate community members on the importance of safely securing your cannabis (and other harmful substances) so that youth cannot access it. We believe that our platform offers us an opportunity to be part of the conversation to influence our community’s health positively, and we take this opportunity and responsibility seriously.

H.E.M.P. Lockable, Smell Proof Bags – now available

After becoming involved in the conversation, we decided as a company to begin selling lockable, smell proof bags made of HEMP, for anyone who would like to provide that safe guard between the cannabis products they are purchasing at HEMP, and youth. Not only do these bags offer a safe place to store cannabis flower, vapor products, or edibles, they also may give parents the opportunity to discuss the substances when the time is right.
