HEMP Happenings January 2017

HEMP Celebrates 2 Year Anniversary

We were so excited to celebrate our 2 year anniversary with our community on Jan. 29. There was live entertainment by local bluegrass band, Tried and Blue, and free dogs from Nomad’s Gourmet Hot Dogs. In addition, we offered plenty of in-house cannabis deals to show our friends and customers how much we appreciate their continued support. We definitely felt the love and hope you did too!

Keeping the Chronic Stocked

The last couple of years has been a dream, and we know 2017 will be no different. We’ve gotten to know so many incredible people, we’ve invited our community to share in art and music events, and we’ve consistently provided the best cannabis product we can find! The entire H.E.M.P. family is excited and passionate about being part of the medical and recreational marijuana industry and providing our customers with a product that improves their lives.

Our mission is to ensure that priority is placed on overall community health and well being. We visit each and every facility we purchase from, and last year we began taking you inside the grows and processing facilities through our “H.E.M.P. Visits” video series on our YouTube channel. This year, the “H.E.M.P. Visits” video series will be taken to the next level, and we will continue to develop long term relationships with the most experienced companies in the legal weed industry, so that we can all trust that it is the safest to consume.

Cannabis Culture Events in 2017

This year’s Sunday Sessions and Featured artists are sure to blow you away. A new local artist is displayed on the 1st of every month, and Sunday Sessions is held every last Sunday of the Month. Join us for these monthly cannabis culture events, as we are providing a safe space to socialize and talk about how weed inspires and helps people everyday.

2017 is already proving to be one for the books! We are launching a new website, our featured artists line-up for the year is outstanding, and we have a new “Budtender’s Choice” video series. We are consistent about our offerings, and are proud to partner with the best that the medical and recreational marijuana industry has to offer here in Washington and Oregon.

H.E.M.P. visits JV Ranch

A methodical, organic approach to the highest quality Cannabis and Rosin in the i502 Market

The H.E.M.P. team first visited Johnny Vanella’s ranch out in Goldendale, Washington in November 2014, a few months before opening our doors to the public on January 31, 2015. Out of the three or four i502 facilities we saw that day, JV Ranch stood out and impressed us on many levels. Johnny’s experience growing on the medical side, his use of Roots Organic Soil, and his overall transparency and genuine approach to growing cannabis. At that point, JV Ranch was an indoor grow facility with much potential to expand to outdoor growing in the future. We left his ranch that day in Eastern Washington feeling overwhelmed with an excitement about the journey we were embarking upon in this new industry. Collectively we knew we had met someone unique and authentic and there was no question that this partnership would be longterm and mutually successful.

Almost two years later, JV Ranch has a phenomenal outdoor/greenhouse grow as well as an indoor garden where he can continue to produce in the off season and experiment with new strains and methods. After visiting Johnny’s ranch a few more times, and most recently taking a trip out there to check out his fresh sungrown harvest, we feel the same (if not more) excitement about his products, his growing methods, and his ambitious approach to becoming Clean Green Certified.

What’s this Clean Green Certification about, Anyway?

Clean Green is all about responsible agriculture. This is the only nationally recognized third party cannabis certification program designed to help agricultural businesses become as sustainable as possible in order to reduce their carbon footprint while offering organic cannabis options to the consumer for their safety and well being.

The certification is fairly rigorous, expensive, and time consuming, and tests things such as soil, water runoff to neighboring streams, as well as which organic pesticides are being used in the process of cannabis cultivation. We work directly with several businesses within the i502 industry that are Clean Green Certified including Botanica Seattle and Gold Leaf Gardens, and indirectly with Puffin Farms and Emerald Twist. Every item on the shelves in an i502 retail store has been tested per LCB regulation (which is another blog for another day), but the Clean Green Certification is an extra step taken by responsible cannabis producers and processors to ensure that every product they put to market is the safest product on the shelves.

“We have an opportunity with these small farms to put in an little extra elbow grease and be a little more conscious of how our choices affect the environment and the people who consume this medicine.”

– Johnny Vanella, JV Ranch Owner

How are CBD and THC ratios established?

The search for the golden ratio.

With demand for high CBD (cannabidiol)cannabis products continuing to grow amongst both medical and recreational users, the cannabis industry is now saturated with a wide selection of products featuring different ratios between the cannabinoids CBD and THC (Tetrahydrocannabinols). Some of the most common ratios on the recreational market are 1:1 (equal amounts of CBD and THC), 2:1 (twice as much CBD as THC), 5:1, 10:1, and 20:1. With all of these wonderful new choices comes the burden for many consumers of trying to decipher which amongst these various options is going to give them the optimal therapeutic effect.

Many people who are seeking CBD for the potential health benefits are not necessarily interested in the “high” or euphoric effects that comes from the psychoactive cannabinoid THC. However, research suggests that CBD and THC work synergistically to provide a wealth of health benefits, a phenomenon known as the Entourage Effect. In other words, CBD alone may not be nearly as effective as it is when consumed in conjunction with THC. So this leaves us begging the question, is there some golden ratio that will allow users to reap the full benefits of CBD while still reducing unwanted mind alteration?

We spoke with Lena Davidson from botanicaSEATTLE (Spot) a company that has supplied High End Market Place with edibles of various CBD levels over the past few years, she stated that “The 5:1 ratio is closest to the pure “medical” ratio that allows for maximum CBD effect with minimum THC.” She added that “There are lots of schools of thought on this; how entourage is “too” entourage? At what point does CBD lose it’s effectiveness? Some research suggests that CBD does it’s best work in smaller doses. We don’t have lots of science available to us, so we’ve made use of our existing resources. We sent a small group to the Northwest Herb Symposium last year to workshop with microbiologist and expert in botanicals Kevin Spelman PhD, and and he is an advocate for the 5:1 ratio as the peak therapeutic range. We used that ratio to guide our decision to make a subspychoative product that (presumably) offers the purest experience of CBD.”

“We don’t have lots of science available to us, so we’ve made use of our existing resources.”

– Lena Davidson, bontanicaSEATTLE (SPOT)

Spot’s approach to choosing the right CBD ratios for products is similar to other industry leaders that we spoke to about this issue. James Hull, Owner of Fairwinds, another producer/processor that provides H.E.M.P. with CBD based products told me that they choose their product ratios by analyzing available research in order to determine “what is most effective for treatments of particular ailments or conditions [they] are targeting.”

While we commend these companies for attempting to take on analysis and research in order to create the best, most effective products that they can, long-term clinical studies should not and cannot fall on the shoulders of producers and processors. More information needs to be gathered on WHY each of these ratios proves to have validity as treatment for various conditions. Is a 20:1 CBD to THC ratio more effective than a 1:1 ratio for someone with epilepsy? In order to give this industry a leg up and continue to supply our communities with reliable products and information, we need to continue to push for more third-party research.

WA allows labs to grow cannabis for scientific purposes.

The good news, is that Washington state officials have agreed to begin conducting studies in order to advance the cannabis industry and enhance consumer products despite federal regulations. Newly allotted applications for cannabis research licenses will allow laboratories to grow cannabis for scientific purposes. Acceptance of applications is expected to begin by January, 2017. According to the News Tribune, Peter Antolin, Liquor Control Board deputy director, believes that this program will “advance the field of marijuana research and solidify Washington as a leader in this field.” Washington State University and the University of Washington are already gearing up to lead cannabis studies.

Our only concern is that research on the effectiveness of current products may take a backseat to determining the medical legitimacy of cannabis in general. Imagine for a moment if no clinical studies were done on pharmaceutical drugs before they hit the market. There would be no standard for effectiveness of products, and it would be up to the consumer to take a risk on buying something that may not help them at all. Not to mention potential side effects that may arise without warning. We are not suggesting that all cannabis products need to go through testing prior to hitting the market, but it would definitely be helpful to get some overarching feedback from an unbiased and well-established viewpoint.
